Recreating an Artifact
“Watching classic making-of documentaries as a kid, where, at the time, he was referred to as, “Jabba’s right hand bird,” Salacious B. Crumb immediately caught my eye. Tim Rose, the character’s performer, shot these great scenes with Salacious talking to the camera and discussing the various creatures in Jabba’s palace™. There’s a magic to puppetry. Even in these unpolished scenes, there’s an immediacy and connection that comes from that art form, imbuing character and life.
We were fortunate enough to spend an extended amount of time with the original puppet, taking measurements and photos to assist in creating this prop replica. I was absolutely thrilled when my friend, Tony McVey, who not only sculpted and fabricated the original puppet for the film, but also had a major role in designing the character, agreed to sculpt our replica.
Tony and I worked together to ensure that our recreation captured not just the character, but the details and vibe of that prop. Where the original film puppet’s body was fabricated foam and latex, Tony sculpted beautiful, organic wrinkling. This gives our resin replica that very specific “fabricated” look that old-school movie creature work so often has. Once Tony wrapped work on the statue, Regal Robot artist Patrick Louie sculpted and paint mastered the faux stone base, including a rough, hand-carved interpretation of Jabba the Hutt’s tattoo. The addition of distressed faux leather and suede help capture the feel of Jabba’s dais, where we most often saw Salacious Crumb seated and laughing.
Along with Max Frey, I personally paint mastered the statue and our team will reproduce that paint, by hand, for each piece in this limited edition. I can’t wait to get them into the hands of collectors and fans!”
