1:1 prop replica Rancor from Return of the Jedi

Recreating an Artifact

“When Star Wars: Return of the Jedi debuted and the Rancor first appeared in that cave below the throne room of Jabba the Hutt™, I was mesmerized! The classic, behind-the-scenes documentaries showcasing the work of Phil Tippett’s creature shop during the production of that 1983 film were a big part of what led me to a life in the world of FX and movie monsters.

Watching scenes of the Lucasfilm creature department at work were a huge inspiration to me. Seeing Phil and his team perform the scaled puppet, beautifully shot to look massive and menacing on the big screen, was incredible. I loved not just the look of the beast (which was outstanding) but the various forms of trickery used by the wizards to create something larger than life.

I’m so excited to have Phil as a part of this run and signing plaques for the collectors bringing this unique replica home. Our goal is for our static resin replica to be the closest recreation of that original puppet possible. To that end, we spent an extraordinary amount of time hands-on with that original prop, and 3D laser-scanned that artifact for this edition.

My good friend and Regal Robot team member, Gordon Tarpley, digitally re-posed and worked with me to meticulously restore the puppet to as close to what was used in production as possible. After high-resolution resin output, the piece was mastered and hand fine-tuned by Maria Teran. I personally detailed the paint master, taking great care to mimic the layered hand paint of the prop, capturing the feel and style of classic movie effects work and not simply a modern paint job.

Throughout the process, we worked to capture both well-known details of this beast and the little known discoveries we made investigating rare behind the scenes images and chatting with the puppet’s original creators. Those include the hand-made, wire-wrapped metal earring, the movie-accurate silicone drool, the various cuts and scars on the character, steel colored eyes (to match the marker-stained steel ball bearings used in the prop) and the bone-colored chitinous lower tail.

After well over a year of development, we’re all so proud debut this piece and I can’t wait to see it in the collections of discerning prop and statue fans and Star Wars collectors!”
