This very special Jabba the Hutt™ Early Concept Maquette Replica – Phil Tippett Legacy Edition goes beyond a signature edition to provide each owner with a truly unique work-of-art. It’s part of our Star Wars™ Archive Collection, a continuation and expansion of our work creating authentic replicas with impeccable lineage.

Extremely limited at just 40 pieces, each hand-painted maquette in this special Legacy Edition will include a premium expanded plaque including a one-of-a-kind pencil illustration. Each was hand-drawn by legendary creature designer, Phil Tippett. The included 3 5/8” wide sketch comes beautifully matted within an 5”x7” frame that also houses a hand-numbered metal nameplate, hand-signed by Tippett. That frame can either stand on a table top or hang on a wall.

Tippett sculpted several variations of the Jabba the Hutt character before hitting on the final design seen in the film. This particularly beastly maquette is a real look inside the mind of Tippett and his wide-open style of creature design. With hands-on access to the original film artifact and high resolution 3D scanning, our team has crafted a faithful recreation of this early concept for the infamous gangster  from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi™.

At approximately 8.25″ wide (including the wood display base), each resin maquette is 100% made in the U.S.A. Every replica in this edition is meticulously hand painted by the artists in our New York studio, making each a unique tribute to the artistry involved behind the scenes of our favorite films!

The maquettes are hand packed in a gloss black box with die-cut foam insert and COA, and double-boxed for shipping.

Do not miss this extraordinary opportunity to bring home not just an authentic replica, scanned from the original artifact, but also an original work of art with a direct connection to the artists that inspire us!

The Archive Collection - Recreating an Artifact

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi™ gave us a look into the palace of Jabba the Hutt™ and at the intergalactic gangster himself. Classic, behind-the-scenes documentaries at the time were a big part of how fans like me relived the film and explored the darkened corners of that palace and the creatures who resided there. Learning about the ILM creature shop during the production of that 1983 film was a big part of what led me to a life in the world of FX and movie monsters.

The sheer variety of ideas showcased within Phil’s concept sculptures for the film really makes clear his exceptional imagination and unique ability to set aside limitations during design work. His three concepts for Jabba the Hutt are wildly different. While the first was rejected as being too human, Phil said this multi-legged slug-like beast was rejected as “too terrible.”  That designation only made me love the design that much more!

We’ve been fortunate to work with Phil on several great replicas and he was the first of the classic creature crew to sketch for us when we started our Legacy Editions. We’re all so proud of this special edition, and I can’t wait to see it in the collections of discerning prop and statue fans and Star Wars collectors!”

– Tom Spina (Regal Robot founder)

During the production of films, the creature effects team will often dream up new and fantastic aliens and beasts by creating small scaled sculptures, called “maquettes,” to showcase their ideas. From this menagerie of maquettes, the film’s director and producer choose which characters will be brought to life for the film as costumes or puppets and what roles they will play in the story.

Sculpted by the creature shop head, Phil Tippett, this frightening beast of a design was an early version of what was to become Jabba the Hutt.
